LaLa welcomes her friend Rae, a Twin Cities seamstress and costume creator who has designed custom looks for drag entertainers for more than 20 years. Rae shares how she learned to sew as a child, owned a bridal shop and later a costume business, then moved to Minneapolis and began designing for drag after marketing at Pride, where a connection with BeBe Benet helped her career blossom. They discuss what makes drag costuming different, including building custom patterns and balancing comfort with stage-ready design, including a Pride-colored gown Rae made for LaLa. Rae also opens up about her breast cancer diagnosis, lumpectomy, node testing, and radiation, and how it inspired “Cancer Is a Drag,” a fundraiser for the Park Nicollet Foundation returning October 17 at the Marriott Northwest.
